Promoting teaching, learning, and practice through competitions, integrating competition with innovation, and cultivating innovative talents capable of independently solving real-world problems is one of the distinctive training models at Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU).
In recent years, HDU has developed a one school, one competition high-quality competition brand, deepening the positive interaction between professional education and academic competitions. The university has established a practical education system that integrates courses—competitions—projects and progressive practical courses with research-based education throughout.
The university offers 99 courses that blend competition with curriculum, breaking traditional teaching boundaries through a combination of extracurricular intensive training, decentralized practice, and classroom discussions, forming a virtuous cycle of learning for application, applying to promote innovation.
Over the past three years, the university has won 1,875 awards in provincial and national-level academic competitions, including 622 national-level awards, with 7,267 awardees. The achievements in high-level academic competitions have repeatedly reached new heights, significantly enhancing students' professional skills and innovative capabilities. In the 2024 National University Student Competition Ranking, HDU ranked 17th nationally.
Electronic Design Competitions: A Legacy of Excellence Over 30 Years
This golden namecard embodies the wisdom and dedication of HDU students over 30 years. Since its first participation in 1995, HDU has competed in the National University Student Electronic Design Competition for 16 consecutive editions. Over the past 30 years, HDU has won 50 national first prizes and 72 national second prizes, ranking 8th nationally in terms of awards. In the past five years, HDU has achieved remarkable success. In 2020, the team of Huang Chongjun, Chen Junyu, and Ye Luna won the highest award, the Renesas Cup, at the Information Technology Frontier Invitational. In 2023, the team of Yang Jinwei, Lin Shifang, and Zhang Hui won the TI Cup, the only highest national award for undergraduate groups, making history.

Steering with Competitions: Building a Comprehensive Training System
HDU integrates resources from its schools of electronics, automation, and communications to establish a technological innovation club for the university student electronic design competition. The club has a dedicated training base equipped with high-end devices such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers, covering five technical directions: control systems, high-frequency communication, instrumentation, power electronics, and signal processing. Students can engage in full-chain practice from circuit design to deep learning, from EDA technology to wireless networks, transforming theoretical knowledge into the ability to solve complex engineering problems.
The competition base is led by over 20 instructors, including national outstanding teachers, spanning fields such as integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. With a training philosophy of interdisciplinary integration and balanced software-hardware skills, the base cultivates urgently needed interdisciplinary talents. Students not only master core skills such as analog circuits and embedded systems but also engage in project-based learning to address cutting-edge industry needs, ensuring that what is needed in the competition is what is learned, and what is sought by enterprises is what is practiced.
Promoting teaching and learning through competitions, the vigorous development of electronic design competitions at HDU has had a positive and profound impact on the university's curriculum and teaching content reforms. Competitions have driven the university to continuously optimize course offerings, update teaching content, and integrate competition-related problems and technologies into classroom teaching, making education more aligned with real-world needs and fostering students' practical application abilities, teamwork skills, and innovative thinking.
The Vast Universe of Competition Participants
Students honed through electronic design competitions are undoubtedly outstanding and highly sought after by top enterprises and universities. Most award-winning students join leading companies such as Huawei, Dahua, and Hikvision or pursue further studies at top institutions like Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University. With the abilities and experiences accumulated through competitions, they excel in their respective fields.
Participating in electronic design competitions at HDU means choosing a path of changing the future through technology. Here, every circuit board holds the potential to change the world, and every debugging session nurtures breakthroughs in technological revolution. Whether it's the glorious moment of winning the TI Cup or the long nights spent debugging circuits, HDU students consistently demonstrate that only passion, perseverance, and the courage to lead can turn dreams into reality.
