Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) has achieved remarkable progress in the 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), released recently by ShanghaiRanking. The university now boasts 15 ranked disciplines, up from 12 in 2024. Its national ranking in China advanced from 98th to 87th, while its global position climbed from 519th to 457th, reflecting strengthened core disciplinary capabilities and expanded international influence.

This year, HDU made its GRAS debut in three new disciplines, with Artificial Intelligence entering directly into the global band of 101–150, demonstrating the university’s strong momentum in emerging and interdisciplinary fields.

Several established strengths also maintained their competitive edge. Six disciplines—including Control Science & Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering—were ranked within the top 101–200 worldwide, marking a consolidated leading group of subjects.

Of the 15 ranked disciplines, 13 improved their positions compared to last year. Electrical & Electronic Engineering showed the most notable rise, jumping from the 201–300 range to 151–200—an improvement of 27%. Telecommunications Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering also rose significantly, illustrating the sustained resilience of HDU’s academic development.

Among provincial universities in Zhejiang, HDU continues to rank among the top institutions, serving as a key driver of high-quality regional higher education.

The GRAS ranking is widely recognized for its objectivity and authority. Its evaluation system covers five key areas: world-class faculty, top achievements, high-quality research outputs, research influence, and international collaboration. These are measured using nine internationally comparable indicators, with data sourced from authoritative databases such as Web of Science and InCites. The selection of core journals and academic awards is determined through real-name voting by experts from top global universities.

Looking ahead, HDU will leverage this achievement to further sharpen its disciplinary strengths, deepen international academic cooperation, and optimize the structure of its academic ecosystem. The university remains committed to advancing world-class discipline development, cultivating high-quality innovative talent, and contributing more substantially to regional socioeconomic growth and technological self-reliance.
